Android to get video chat via Google Talk upgrade

Android to get video chat via Google Talk upgrade - CNN.com: "Google is beginning its rollout of Google Talk video chat to Android devices.

Android device users will be able to use video and voice chat with any Google Talk contact using another Android devices (phones or tablets) or Google Talk on Gmail. The features will work of standard 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi connections.

According to the Google Mobile blog, these features are rolling out to Nexus S phones over the next few weeks along with the next over-the-air OS update. Video chat via Google Talk will be available on other Android 2.3 and higher devices soon.

Using the new features is simple. On your Android device, from the Google Talk contacts list, you'll see a video and voice chat icon next to each contact. Touch the button for the feature you'd like to use, and chat away.

Video can be paused while audio chat continues if you need to navigate elsewhere during a video session. During voice or video chat, text chats from that contact are overlaid on the device screen.

Video and voice chat first came to Gmail late in 2008 and to iGoogle in 2009.

Blockbuster files for bankruptcy protection

"Troubled video-rental chain Blockbuster Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection and said it plans to keep stores and kiosks open as it reorganizes.

The move, long expected and pre-arranged with bondholders, effectively ends an era that Blockbuster dominated — of Americans visiting video-store chains for the latest movie-rental releases.

Increasingly, Americans are watching movies via video subscription services like Netflix Inc., video on demand and vending machine services such as Redbox.

In a submission to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York on Thursday, the company said it reached an agreement with bondholders on a recapitalization plan.

Blockbuster plans to reduce debt from nearly $1 billion to about $100 million or less by swapping debt for equity in a reorganized Blockbuster with bondholders that hold about 80.1 percent of the company's senior notes.

It has received commitments for $125 million in 'debtor-in-possession' financing from senior noteholders to repay customers, suppliers and employees during the reorganization.

'After a careful and thorough analysis, we determined that the process announced today provides the optimal path for recapitalizing our balance sheet and positioning Blockbuster for the future as we continue to transform our business model to meet the evolving preferences of our customers,' said CEO Jim Keyes.

Cashmore Sees Mashable Becoming "Major Media Player"

If you had to pick the one buzzword that’s dominating social media chatter today, it would have to be location. Just over a year ago, Foursquare burst onto the scene at the SXSW conference in Austin, TX. Since then, it’s only grown dramatically.



The result has been a battle for domination in the geolocation space. While many still think Foursquare could be the next Twitter, rivals such as Gowalla (Gowalla) are giving the mobile startup some heat, and big players such as Facebook (Facebook) and Twitter (Twitter) are launching location features or are about to launch them.

Mashable's Pete Cashmore sat down with Bloomberg’s Cris Valerio to discuss the location trend, the battle brewing between Foursquare (Foursquare) and Gowalla at this year’s SXSW, the gold mine that is location-based advertising, the iPad and even a little bit about the future of Mashable (Mashable).

Turning to video to help you land a dream job

Careers- msnbc.com: "Louie Bernstein lost his job as a general manager for an Atlanta computer company on Feb. 2 and immediately decided an ordinary résumé wouldn’t cut it in this job market.

So Bernstein, 57, turned to YouTube. He created an eight-minute video of a mock interview using his camcorder. He wrote the script and had his son play the role of interviewer, and he now sends a link to the video along with his résumé when applying for jobs.

“My wife thought I was crazy spending time on this when I should be doing the traditional stuff like networking,” he said. “But I need to do something that stands out and separates me from the average bear.”

Videos can set some job hunters apart, especially in a tight labor market. And a growing number of employers are actually turning to video to interview far-flung candidates.

That means you may have to get your Fellini hat on, or at least start thinking about how videos can help your career.

While Bernstein hasn’t gotten an interview yet, his video has already been viewed more than 100 times.

But other job seekers have found success with videos.



Take Eric Romer. He heard about a marketing manager job at razor company HeadBlade via Twitter and decided to set up a blog called “Hire Me, HeadBlade,” where he included a YouTube video of himself shaving his head with the company’s product.

“I got a response within 24 hours, and the founder/CEO flew me out to interview less than a week later,” said Romer.

Todd Greene, HeadBlade’s CEO, said: “When I saw Eric's head shave video, I knew that he is, indeed, a HeadBlader.”

Romer started his new gig in Culver City, Calif., on Jan. 18.

While some hiring managers shun the often amateurish mini movies, others rave about them.

“It’s virtually impossible to get an impression of someone from a résumé, and videos have saved us so much time in the screening process,” said Heather Logrippo, owner of Distinctive Homes magazine.

So many people look great on paper, she said, but when they show up for an interview, they don’t match what they put down in their résumé and cover letter."

YouTube may rent streaming videos

"It's one of the great success stories of the Internet: Quickly going from novelty website to cultural touchstone, YouTube is now one of the most grade-A, top-line, and biggest websites on the net today.

It's also one of the web's biggest disasters, since it makes absolutely no money: Google reportedly will lose about half a billion dollars running the site this year. Aside from a few ads here and there, there's really no revenue stream for the impossibly popular site.

Solution? How about renting movies?

Streaming video has been the Next Big Thing for entertainment pushers for quite some time, and Netflix has famously embraced the idea of streaming entire films to its subscribers, a service that is becoming phenomenally popular. But getting people to pay for a streaming video on a per-view basis instead of getting a movie you can download outright (even on a time-limited basis) has been elusive.

Even trickier: The idea of doing all of this in the web browser as opposed to, say, Apple's approach, which lets movie renters watch a film on their computer, their phone, or their television via the Apple TV box."
