Wanted: A Sexier Wristband For iPod Nano, By Incase

By James Gaddy, FastCompany.com

Gadget accessories maker Incase has been on a roll this year, from capsule collections with A.P.C. and Andy Warhol to its upcoming expansion into headphones later this year. But now the Apple loyalists have a new accessories obsession to hold them over until then: the Flex Wristband, the best attachment for the iPod Nano that we’ve seen since Scott Wilson’s feel-good story on Kickstarter last year.

Thankfully, the folks at Incase have kept the two best parts of Wilson’s model: The Flex Wristband employs an open-sided design that leaves the headphone port and connector exposed, so you can recharge or sync the Nano up without removing it from the wristband; and it also uses an easy snap-in locking hold that prevents scratches.

But that’s where the similarities end. Incase’s model classes up the joint a bit with a flexible, expandable, one-size-fits-all steel band that offers up a more professional, dignified approach while keeping the playfulness intact: it’s business and party in the front. And the matte finish in both silver and black is understated enough to go with just about anything.

Apple's iPod, Apple TV Updates: 10 Big Questions and Answers

Apple's iPod, Apple TV Updates: 10 Big Questions and Answers | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

"With Steve Jobs and company unveiling so many new products—new iPods, a reborn Apple TV, Ping, iOS4 updates and more—a few questions is only natural.

Apple now lives is a Sisyphean world where no matter how far up the hill it pushes the hype boulder, it's always rolling back down by the end of the day. At this point, there's no way any Apple launch event can live up to expectations. That said, Apple CEO Steve Jobs certainly gave it the old college try yesterday. There were a lot of product updates. The whole iPod line got a refresh. He introduced not one but two iOS updates, and we got a new version of iTunes. The two biggest announcements were, easily, the revitalized Apple TV and the surprising social network for music, Ping.

Since Ping is part of iTunes 10, it didn't get the 'one more thing' treatment (Apple TV was the chosen one). That's kind of a shame since it was, easily, the most unexpected launch of the day. iTunes has 160 million users and now—Bingo!—they're, potentially, all part of a brand new social network. This raised eyebrows and questions. In fact, I heard a lot of questions both during and after the presentation. Let's walk through them and, in lieu of getting a one-on-one with Steve Jobs, here are all of my best answers.

Apple unveils new box for streaming movies, TV

Apple unveils new box for streaming movies, TV - Yahoo! News

"Apple Inc. announced a smaller, cheaper version of its Apple TV device for streaming movies and television shows over the Internet and into the living room. It also unveiled a new line of iPods, including a touch-screen Nano model.

The tiny new Apple TV system announced Wednesday will only let people rent, not buy, content. For first-run high-definition movies the day they come out on DVD, people will have to pay $4.99. High-definition TV show rentals will be 99 cents.

The price of the box is also being cut to $99, from $229. Cheaper options for streaming video had been available, including Roku's set-top boxes that start at $60.

Apple TV has been around since 2007, but it hasn't caught on with the mainstream. For one thing, it doesn't record shows the way TiVo and other digital video recorders do. And the need to sync the box with a computer was too complicated for most consumers, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said.

'We've sold a lot of them, but it's never been a huge hit,' Jobs said.

Why the iPad Will Change Everything

READ complete article on Newsweek.com

"What's the big deal about Apple's iPad, currently arriving in stores on the biggest wave of hype since, well, Apple's iPhone? The easy answer is that the iPad comes from Apple, and we always expect big things from Apple because it is run by Steve Jobs, whose California garage was the birthplace of the personal computer in 1976. Since then, Jobs has transformed computing by making machines people actually like to use. He's changed the movie business, buying Pixar and ushering in the era of computer animation, and he's led a takeover of the music business with the iPod and the iTunes music store. Then came the iPhone, and even now, nearly three years after its introduction, no other phone comes close.

Jobs is a relentless perfectionist whose company creates such beautifully designed products that they have changed our expectations about how everything around us should work. He has an uncanny ability to cook up gadgets that we didn't know we needed, but then suddenly can't live without. The iPad is his personal pet project. It's something he's been working on for years, reportedly even while he was recuperating from a liver transplant. Jobs calls it 'a truly magical and revolutionary device,' and supposedly has told people close to him that the iPad is the most important thing he's ever done.

Which is why so many of us raced to San Francisco in January to get an up-close view of the miraculous tablet. Yet my first thought, as I watched Jobs run through his demo, was that it seemed like no big deal. It's a bigger version of the iPod Touch, right? Then I got a chance to use an iPad, and it hit me: I want one. Like the best Apple products, the user interface is so natural it disappears. The iPad runs on the iPhone operating system, so it's even easier to use than a Mac. Like the iPhone, the iPad is a sleek, slim device. It has a nice 9.7-inch screen, weighs only one and a half pounds, and can play movies for 10 hours on a single battery charge. Right away I could see how I would use it. I'd keep it in the living room to check e-mail and browse the Web. I'd take it to the kitchen and read The New York Times while I eat breakfast. I'd bring it with me on a plane to watch movies and read books.

That may not be life-changing, but is it worth 500 bucks? Yup. Done. Sold. No wonder, then, that by some accounts Apple has received preorders for 240,000 iPads, and some analysts project it could sell up to 5 million units in the product's first 12 months. One early adopter is Steve Wozniak, who cofounded Apple with Jobs. Woz has already ordered three iPads and plans to camp out in front of an Apple store the night before the iPad's debut, just for kicks. 'We all say we want things to be simpler, and now here is this simple thing. I think it will be a huge success,' Wozniak says."

Apple rockets to most profitable quarter ever

Apple rockets to most profitable quarter ever - Yahoo! News: "Apple Inc. rocketed to its most profitable quarter ever over the holidays, as huge sales of the iPhone and Macintosh computers led to a nearly 50 percent jump in net income.

The company offered no clues about what it plans to unveil Wednesday in San Francisco, although analysts expect the new product to be a tablet-style computer. CEO Steve Jobs indicated that investors should expect a significant event.

'The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we're really excited about,' Jobs said in a statement.

Apple also offered a profit and revenue forecast above Wall Street forecasts.

The iPhone's rollout in several major new markets, including China and South Korea, helped Apple double sales of the hot phone. Apple also got a boost because now it puts iPhone revenue and profit on its books when the gadget is sold, rather than deferring those results over the presumed life of the device."

Apple's influence reigns over CES 2010

By Suzanne Choney / msnbc.com (CLICK to read more)

"While Apple isn't participating — and never has — in the annual Consumer Electronics Show, the company's presence has long loomed over it. That's no different this year, with non-stop buzz about an Apple tablet possibly being announced later this month. What is different is that Apple-related products are being given their own showcase at CES, a first for the world's largest trade show for consumer technology.

Considering Apple's influence in the world of personal technology, it may seem like a 'no duh' and years overdue. But historically, Apple took part in the annual Macworld conference, generally held around the same time as CES, often stealing its thunder with new product announcements, from the iPhone to iPods.

This year, Apple is not participating in Macworld, but the Consumer Electronics Association, sponsor of CES, is providing an 'iLounge Pavilion,' where more than 100 exhibitors will be showing iPhone, iPod and Mac-related wares.

Also, one of the events at the Las Vegas show is a 'Mobile Apps Showdown,' a competition that whether intentionally or not, acknowledges Apple's role in the cell phone 'app,' or application, market. The company's online 'App Store' for the iPhone, started 18 months ago, now has more than 100,000 programs available to consumers."

Apple tablet unveiling in January

By Jessica Mintz / Associated Press (CLICK to read more)

"Speculation intensified Monday that Apple Inc. will soon unveil a tablet-style gadget for consuming music, movies, books and other media.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple is planning to take the wraps off such a device this month and begin shipping it in March.

That jibes with several online reports that the company has scheduled an event for Jan. 26 or 27 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, one of Apple's customary spaces for product launches.

The gadget, which online pundits have at different times christened the iTablet and the iSlate, is to have a 10-inch to 11-inch touch screen, said the Journal, citing unnamed people briefed on the matter.

Apple spokesman Steve Dowling said the company does not comment on rumors and speculation."

CNET Prizefight: Zune HD vs. iPod Touch 3G

Once again, CNET does an excellent (and thorough) job of reviewing gadgets—this time, a prizefight extravaganza between the Zune HD and the iPod Touch 3G. Excellent review!

PCMag: Zune HD vs. iPod touch

The Zune HD sure looks pretty, though I've always had my eye on the iPod Touch 30 or 60 gig. Now that I have Christmas money to spend, what to buy? What to buy? ;-)

iPhone NFL Kick off: Does Madden 10 play nice without buttons?

by iPhone Atlas - CNET Reviews (CLICK to read more)

"The real NFL season is about to kick off, and EA has seized the opportunity to finally slide in the release of its much-anticipated port of Madden to the iPhone/iPod Touch format. It represents the meeting of the mobile entertainment industry's unstoppable force, Apple's black slab of wonder, with the gaming industry's immovable object. Available at $7.99 through the kickoff of the Steelers-Titans game tonight and $9.99 afterward, is it worth your hard-earned tailgate dollars? We played it last week here at the CNET offices and played it a lot more on our own iPhone last night, and here's our verdict."

iPod Nano vs. Flip Mino: Game On

By PC World: Yahoo! Tech (CLICK to read more)

"The results are in and the iPod Nano Video is no game-changer, but that doesn't mean it won't dominate the competition. PC World has released a head-to-head comparison of the iPod Nano's video function against other popular video-enabled devices.

The comparison, of course, included the current darling and market leader in the camcorder world, the Pure Digital Flip Mino. When it comes to quality, the Nano just doesn't match up with the Mino. '[The iPod Nano] can't quite compete with a pocket camcorder such as Pure Digital's Flip Mino,' according to PC World's Tim Moynihan.

So the Nano loses out on picture quality, but, just like other devices created by Cupertino, this latest Apple gadget could still take a bite out of the competition."

Old MP3 players that are still worth buying

MP3 Insider - CNET Reviews: "There was a time in the history of MP3 players when new models were clearly superior to hardware that had been on the shelf a few years. If you were one of the unfortunate souls who bought an iPod Photo a few months before the iPod Video came out, you know exactly what I mean.

These days, the MP3 and portable video player landscape has hit a plateau of sorts. Sure, you've got your iPod Touch and Zune HD out there to keep things interesting, but for the others, features such as sound quality, format compatibility, screen size, and capacity have stayed relatively unchanged over the past few years. In fact, when it comes to storage capacity, your choices are more limited today then they were a few years ago--back when the hard drive was still king."
