"Around the country, a new career-minded education standard is slowly edging out the old academic focus on Lord Of the Flies book summaries and five-paragraph essays. So far 42 states have pledged to adopt the (coercively) voluntary standards championed by President Obama, the National Governors Association, and billionaire education crusader, Bill Gates.

While educators are slowly dipping their feet into the pool of critical thinking, persuasive communications, and exploratory learning, the Gates foundation is looking to swing the direction of the standards with a mega-investment in digital learning.

Gates has previously financially supported YouTube sensation Sal Khan, funded the game-centered Quest2Learn school, and most recently, invested millions more in educational video games, hoping their addictive quality can lead to scientific curiosity.

Nintendo 3DS is looking good

Here's a video review from MSNBC.com on the recently announced Nintendo 3DS (with 3D viewing). A little pricey at around $249, but my kids love their portable hand-held Nintendo gaming device. I think this looks like a winner!

Brian Wood spent his life thrilling millions of faceless gamers, but his last moment was spent saving the lives of those he loved most.

Wood, a 33 year-old lead designer at popular game developer Relic Entertainment, was on his way back to his Washington home when his wagon was struck by an oncoming Chevy Blazer being driven by a 21 year-old woman believed to be driving under the influence. With his pregnant wife Erin in the passenger seat, Wood swerved his car to put himself directly in the path of the oncoming SUV -- a decision that ultimately cost him his life, but protected his wife and unborn child from harm. Two other passengers riding in the backseat of the Blazer were also killed.

'All the policeman say that if we had hit the car head-on all of us would be dead,' Erin Wood told The Province. 'At the very last second (Brian) braked really hard and turned right so that he would be put in the path of the SUV and not me and the baby, and that is the only thing that saved us both.'

'He was always sacrificing himself for me and the baby,' she added.

But while Wood's impossibly brave act left a permanent void in the life of Erin Wood, the same people who Brian strived to please with his work have returned the favor with a striking show of support for his bereaved widow.

Especially as we expect to see many of these low-cost, low-power laptops in the hands of students during the back-to-school season, it's important to have a little action/RPG/adventure/puzzle break handy when one gets tired of taking lecture notes.

As usual, many of these entries are re-releases of classic games, originally available when even high-end computer hardware was at best comparable with today's entry-level systems. Online services such as Good Old Games and Steam are great resources for these.

One important exception is the new online gaming service OnLive, which takes current high-end PC games, renders the 3D graphics remotely, then streams you the video as you play. It sounds like a crazy idea, but it actually works pretty well, even on Netbooks. Check out our extensive hands-on look at OnLive here.

GameStop to hire 15,000 seasonal workers

"As usual, GameStop Inc. plans to hire about 15,000 seasonal, part-time workers to help with the holiday rush, the video game retailer said Tuesday.

But the company expects more applicants for the jobs — which pay minimum wage — than in previous years because of the economic turmoil that's left millions unemployed.

GameStop usually hires temporary employees in the fall, until Dec. 24, and said Tuesday the number of the new part-time workers this year is 'consistent with' its seasonal hiring in 2008 and 2007.'

The move will temporarily increase the company's employee base by 46 percent. The number of its in-store 'game advisers' — people who help shoppers pick out video games — will grow by about 78 percent.

The company said the temporary jobs are spread out evenly across its stores around the U.S.

Shares of GameStop, the world's largest video game retailer, rose 47 cents, or 2 percent, to $24.55 in midday trading."

Nintendo drops Wii price to $199

"Nintendo has officially announced that the price of the Wii will drop to $199.99, effective on Sunday. The long-rumored $50 price cut comes in the wake of recent price drops for the PlayStation 3 ($299, with built-in Blu-ray player) and Xbox 360 ($299 for the 120GB version with built-in DVD player and Netflix support), which have boosted sales of the Sony and Microsoft consoles. (To date, the Wii remains the best-selling home game console of the three.)

Other than the price cut, there are no other changes to the current Wii bundle--you're still getting the console, along with the Wiimote and Nunchuk controllers and the bundled Wii Sports game. By contrast, there's at least one rumor that the U.K. will get a Wii package that adds the MotionPlus peripheral and Wii Sports Resort to the mix. Meanwhile, white remains the only color choice in North America (Japanese consumers can choose black as well).

Nintendo also took the opportunity to officially announce the release date for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which had previously been slated for a vague 'fall 2009' window. The multiplayer Super Mario game will hit store shelves on November 15.

If you do like the Beatles, you're even dumber if you haven't considered 'Beatles: Rock Band,' the new music game for Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 that transforms your sing-along self into a virtual John, Paul, George or Ringo, complete with musical genius.

'The game is good, the graphics are very good — we were great,' said Starr when premiering the game this summer. And he's right on all three counts.

But not every song is as fun to play as it is to listen to. It takes chemistry and energy to really get things moving. So without further adieu, I give you the top five most enjoyable 'Beatles: Rock Band' songs when played with a band."

NerdBoyTV NOTE: I saw this on a video demo screen at Toys 'R Us. WOW, the graphics are AWESOME. Terrific way to pass The Beatles music onto the next generations. My 12-year-old loves it!

Gamer study reinforces stereotypes, players say

"Tod Curtis says he’s “near 35, not fat, not bummed” and is an “extroverted video-game player who appreciates proper science.” The Bedford, Ind., man does not, however, appreciate the recent research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of adults ages 19 to 90.

The study found that the average age of video-game players is 35, that many male players have a higher body mass index (and are overweight) and that female players reported “greater depression” than women who don’t play video games.

“I've been playing video games since 1978, with the Atari 2600, when I was 6 years old,” said Curtis, who is now 37. “I play about four to eight hours per week, with a lot of variation. I had always planned to become a video-game designer/computer scientist, but pursued a career as an orthodontist instead.”"
