Obama has dinner with the WHOLE Internet!

Let's see, we have Obama sitting with Steve Jobs to his left and Mark Zuckerberg to his right (that's about $100 billion right THERE). Also apparently in the house, Google exec Eric Schmidt, Yahoo!'s Carol Bartz, Oracle's Larry Ellison, and Twitter's Dick Costolo. This is like a "nerd's" dream come true, huh? LOL

Obama chats with Facebook's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg

I think this is soooooooooo kewl. Obama talking with Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook with Carol Bartz (in red) of Yahoo! standing behind them!

Merging E-Mail and Social Networking, Yahoo Tries to Avoid Google's Mistakes

Merging E-Mail and Social Networking, Yahoo Tries to Avoid Google's Mistakes - Newsweek

In February, Yahoo got to watch with schadenfreude as Google drove its new Buzz social network straight over a cliff with inadequate privacy controls. Now Yahoo has decided it wants to head for pretty much the same cliff, just with a slightly firmer grip on the wheel.

Yahoo is beefing up its Yahoo Updates service, a relatively unknown social network that allows users to post status updates, photos, and other content by integrating it directly into Yahoo Mail. The numbers make a compelling case: Yahoo Mail has some 280 million users, so if the Sunnyvale, Calif., company can flip a switch and create a social network around that—why, it'd be a sudden player against Facebook, a global force at nearly 500 million users, and Twitter, at 75 million.

No doubt that is the same thought that occurred to Google when it introduced Buzz as an add-on to its popular Gmail service. That launch didn't go so well. Yahoo is paying close attention to the litany of mistakes Google made, especially the flaw that allowed some users' lists of frequently e-mailed contacts to go public. The privacy outcry then was swift and loud, with journalists whose confidential sources were revealed, as well as battered spouses whose ex-husbands suddenly saw their status updates, among those affected. Yahoo says it has been slowly adding Updates functionality to its various products—Yahoo Messenger, Yahoo Profiles—and studying how users respond. This "phased integration," Yahoo says, has elicited "overwhelmingly positive feedback."

Facebook Overtakes Yahoo: Now the Second Most Visited Site in U.S.

READ article on Mashable

New data released earlier today by web analytics firm Compete.com reveals that there has been a major shift at the top of the web charts: Facebook is now larger than Yahoo in the U.S.

Yahoo for years was the world’s most popular website — its ubiquitous portal has dominated the web since the 90s. Two years ago however, Google vaulted past Yahoo and became the Internet’s most popular destination. Last month, it became Facebook’s turn to knock Yahoo down another peg.

In December 2009, Yahoo garnered 133.45 million visitors in the U.S. Facebook wasn’t far behind with 132.13 million uniques. In the first month of 2010 though, there was a role reversal: Facebook’s traffic rose to 133.62 million visitors, while Yahoo shrunk down to 132.00 million.

GeoCities closes today -- farewell!

By Christopher Null / Yahoo! Tech

"It's the end of an era in the world of the web: Yahoo!'s GeoCities service is finally shutting down today. The shutdown was originally announced in April of this year.

GeoCities was one of the early success stories of the nascent online world. Launched in 1995, its popularity quickly exploded. By 1999 it had become big enough to attract the interest of our very own corporate bosses, and Yahoo! paid over $3.5 billion for it that year, making it one of the web's most legendary acquisitions.

GeoCities let anyone build a simple website hosted by the service, for free. Over the years an endless number of quirky and, some might say, utterly useless websites, and in recent years a whole host of competing offerings have come on the market. Most notably, GeoCities was a key precursor to the blogging industry, which rose to prominence as similarly free services such as Blogger and WordPress, which also let anyone create a website about anything -- only with a little more structure than the notoriously free-form GeoCities.

As the BBC notes, at one point GeoCities was the third most popular destination on the Internet.

While GeoCities may be gone officially, it will always be remembered. In fact, GeoCities lives on indefinitely courtesy of the Internet Archive, which has been busily archiving GeoCities-hosted sites since its closure was announced. The 'historical record' of GeoCities can be found on the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, though of course that record will never be 100 percent complete.

Ah, well.... Join me and raise a glass to GeoCities as we see it off into that great digital graveyard in the sky."

The 10 Stupidest Tech Company Blunders

PC World: "Some of the biggest high-tech deals never happened. Some of the most promising products and services never came to be. Why? Because the people and companies involved didn't realize what they were letting slip through their fingers, or they simply couldn't foresee what would happen afterward.

Change just a few circumstances, and there might not be an Apple or a Microsoft today. Yahoo might be the king of the search hill, with Google lagging behind. You might be reading this on a Xerox-built computer via a CompuServe account while listening to your favorite tunes on a RealPod.

People say hindsight is 20-20. If so, our vision is acute. Here are our picks for the biggest missed opportunities in the history of technology."

One-Year-Old Hulu Adds Boxee-like Friends Feature

One-Year-Old Hulu Adds Boxee-like Friends Feature: "Hulu is celebrating its first year and adding new features. The online video service, co-owned by News Corp., NBC Universal, and Providence Equity Partners, went from beta to live a year ago and began offering users access to online videos, television shows, and clips from various content providers.

As part of its milestone celebration, Hulu has added a Friends feature to Hulu.com. The site integrated with e-mail providers, including Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Hotmail, and social-networking companies Facebook and MySpace to let users invite friends to Hulu.

Similar to the way users on Facebook can keep track of what their friends are doing with status updates, Hulu has added a Tab to the Friends feature allowing users to keep track of what friends are watching, subscribing to, and discussing."

The best of CES 2009 : Christopher Null

The best of CES 2009 : Christopher Null : Yahoo! Tech: "As expected, CES was a quieter show this year than usual -- but that's not such a bad thing. Cab lines have been short. There's less pushing and shoving. You can get a seat in the press room (miracle!). And you can actually see stuff in the booths instead of just the backs of other people's heads.

But ask around -- or just ask me -- and some clear favorites have emerged as the 'best' of CES 2009. In fact, though there are fewer people doing the buzzing, they're buzzing louder than ever about some really impressive gear. To wit: Here are my picks for the must-see gadgets on the CES show floor 2009."
