One-Year-Old Hulu Adds Boxee-like Friends Feature: "Hulu is celebrating its first year and adding new features. The online video service, co-owned by News Corp., NBC Universal, and Providence Equity Partners, went from beta to live a year ago and began offering users access to online videos, television shows, and clips from various content providers.

As part of its milestone celebration, Hulu has added a Friends feature to Hulu.com. The site integrated with e-mail providers, including Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Hotmail, and social-networking companies Facebook and MySpace to let users invite friends to Hulu.

Similar to the way users on Facebook can keep track of what their friends are doing with status updates, Hulu has added a Tab to the Friends feature allowing users to keep track of what friends are watching, subscribing to, and discussing."

Next Big Thing Could Be Boxee

Tech & Gadgets Blog: "More people are getting hip to Hulu, the online service that lets you watch ad-supported TV shows and movies on your computer, helped in large part by the company's hit Super Bowl ad. But in the fast-moving world of technology, the next big thing could be Boxee, software that, like Microsoft's Windows Media Center and Apple Front Row, culls content ranging from online videos and TV shows to music and movies.

But the big difference between Boxee and those applications (besides the fact that it's free and open-source software), as well as websites like Hulu and YouTube, is it adds a social networking component. Registered users can share with Boxee 'friends' what they are watching and recommend and rate content, and they can also post the info on social networks like Twitter and FriendFeed."
