Getting Rid of Your Cable TV

You don't need to spend $100 a month any more... mostly. Do you want to save over $1000 a year? Then get rid of your cable. Yep, you’ll be giving up a lot – local news, high school football (maybe), town meeting broadcasts. But thanks to a website called Hulu (which is free), and a piece of hardware Amazon sells called the ZV Box at (check it out at zeevee.com), you can officially cut the $100/month cable cord and watch thousands of shows…and any other video available on the web. Click on link to see how you do it.

Tripipedia: Guidebook trounces tech gadgets in travel challenge

Don't relegate those old-fashioned guidebooks to the dust piles of eight-tracks and Beta tapes just yet.

Conde Nast Traveler magazine recently sent three reporters to Moscow to undertake the typical tourist activities of finding a hotel, restaurant and attractions. One had an iPhone, another the BlackBerry Bold and the third a paper guidebook.

Bing it on: Microsoft overhauls search, again

Microsoft Corp. is rolling out a redesigned search site in the coming days and hopes it will lure more Web surfers than the two most recent incarnations, Live Search and MSN Search.

The new site, Bing, adds touches intended to make everyday Web searching a little less haphazard. Bing also tries to make it easier for people to buy things, book travel and find credible health information.

History has not been kind to even the best search innovators. Many companies, including Amazon.com Inc. and IAC/InterActiveCorp., and startups like Hakia, ChaCha and Cuil have tried to improve on the basic '10 blue links' format of search results, but Google Inc. has remained unstoppable.

Microsoft's last effort, Live Search, failed to catch on partly because the software maker didn't do much to promote it. Marketing is no guarantee of success — IAC heavily advertised makeovers of Ask.com — but this time, Microsoft appears to be taking no chances. Ad Age reported Microsoft plans to spend as much as $100 million on advertising Bing.

Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft has been stuck in third place behind Google and Yahoo Inc. for years. Its share of U.S. search queries was 8.2 percent in April, according to the research group comScore Inc. Google was used for 64.2 percent of queries, and Yahoo's share totaled 20.4 percent.

PS3 bested by older brother

According to official April figures released by the NPD Group, the Playstation 3 found itself beaten out for fifth place by an unusual competitor: its predecessor, the Playstation 2.

A 50% leap in Playstation 2 sales accounts for the surprising change, an increase likely prompted by the system's price cut on April 1, a move which apparently electrified interest in the nine-year old platform.

The PS2's success was probably the only nugget of April sales news to put smiles on the faces of Sony execs. Nintendo platforms continued their lockdown of the top spots, with the Wii coming second and the DS coming both first and third, courtesy of the just-launched DSi: the DS's two hardware variations accounted for an astonishing million sales during April.Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 was down slightly over last April, but still managed a solid fourth place and remains on course for a record-breaking year.

Dell launches 'Della,' a women's PC site

Computer sales have slowed down, but has it really come to this? Dell, the world's second largest manufacturer of PCs, last week launched a cutesy site for women called 'Della.' What's next, 'Dello' for guys? Maybe No. 1 PC maker H-P wants to do something similar like 'Hewlett-Packarda' for females, and 'Hewlett-Packardo,' as in Ricky Ricardo, for men?

Sounds silly, just as silly as Della is. Netbooks and laptops are presented as fashion statements, and the site's 'tech tips' includes a feature, 'Seven Unexpected Ways a Netbook Can Change Your Life,' which starts out by saying, 'Once you get beyond how cute they are, you'll find that netbooks can do a lot more than check your e-mail.'

How much ‘Guitar Hero’ is too much?

Will 2009 be the year of the “Guitar Hero” glut?

Sure seems like it. Activision Blizzard recently promised no fewer than five new games from its “Hero” family of games. There’s “Band Hero,” a top-40 version of “Guitar Hero.” There’s “DJ Hero,” complete with a new turntable controller, and “Guitar Hero 5,” the next full version of the game that started it all.

Find Your Files for Free With Everything Search Engine

Everything Search Engine allows for quick and easy name and location searches for, well, everything. This tiny, free download quickly creates an index database of all your files (but not their contents) and displays them in a simple, no-nonsense search window.

Search results display as you type, and techie types can construct advanced searches using wildcards, Boolean operators, and regular expressions. Non-experts can still get plenty of use out of basic searches such as 'family*jpg'--which will quickly display any file that starts with 'family,' ends with 'jpg,' and has anything in between (represented by the '*' wildcard).

You can double-click a search result to take the default action, such as opening a Word doc or playing a movie file, or right-click to open its folder, rename it, or perform other actions. You can also drag and drop files listed in search results to other locations, as you would from an Explorer window.

Your 3G Sidekick LX questions, answered

Does the new T-Mobile Sidekick have Wi-Fi? What about YouTube videos? Turn-by-turn directions? How much is it without a contract? Read on for the answers.

Any Wi-Fi on the device, or have they still not gotten it together that we want Wi-Fi?
Besides 3G and GPS, Wi-Fi is probably the most-requested Sidekick feature—and sadly, no Wi-Fi on the new LX (check out my hands-on report here). That's a shame, because speedy though T-Mobile's 3G network is, I've noticed spotty coverage on my LX review unit—especially indoors—and built-in Wi-Fi would be a handy addition. Why no Wi-Fi? Good question.

Can you watch YouTube and other videos on the Sidekick?
Yes indeed—just visit YouTube's mobile site on the Sidekick's Web browser, click on a video, and playback begins automatically. You can also transfer MPEG4/H.264 videos onto the Sidekick's microSD memory card.

How is the GPS? Turn by turn directions?
GPS on the new Sidekick is pretty accurate—outdoors, it pinpointed my position right down to my backyard, although indoors the GPS receiver couldn't get a fix. No turn-by-turn directions, at least for now, although you do get Microsoft Live Search for finding nearby businesses and getting point-to-point (if not not turn-by-turn) directions.

Why BlackBerry Still Beats iPhone For Some

News that the Research In Motion BlackBerry Curve outsold iPhones in Q1 surprised many observers, but for those who follow the smartphone market closely, it makes a certain kind of sense. Push-button BlackBerry models like the Curve play well against the iPhone's most notable weakness: text entry. Among other things, this demonstrates why RIM would be wise to skip the consumer smartphone business and stick to what it does best--business handsets. And, in my opinion, that requires keypads, not touchscreens.

It is easy to understand why CEO Jim Balsillie is telling investors a sequel to RIM's touchscreen BlackBerry Storm is in the offing. Consumer handsets are a huge market, but it is not one I can imagine RIM will ever control.

My guess is that about the time RIM comes out with a Storm replacement that Verizon will start getting iPhones. Verizon customers who now purchase Storms because they do not want to change carriers will jump at the iPhone the moment Verizon has some to sell.

Beyond Flowers: The Best Tech Gadgets for Mother’s Day

READ "We know from experience that Mom will always welcome flowers and chocolates, but we also know that those gifts don’t usually last long — and that they can’t take pictures or send e-mail. So with Mother’s Day coming up on May 10, you face a choice.

Option 1: Choose a stylish mini-notebook, cool MP3 player or swanky phone from this list, thus solidifying your claim to be Mom’s favorite.

Option 2: Send your mother a cheap card that’ll inevitably arrive a day late, and prepare to live a life of undying guilt, shame and regret.

Take all the time you need to decide. We’ll wait."

Amazon Kindle DX: 9.7-inch Screen For $489

Amazon’s third incarnation of the Kindle is here, folks. All 9.7-inches of it. Specs and info leaked about the now official Kindle over the last week and they seemed pretty much dead on. It comes packing with the larger screen, auto-rotating screen, and finally supports PDF files fully with a native PDF reader. This larger Kindle also ups the storage capacity from 1,500 books on the Kindle 2 to 3,500 on the Kindle DX. The pre-order is up now and will ship shortly if you’re willing to drop $489 on one.

Super-sized Kindle aimed at newspaper readers

Amazon.com's Kindle electronic reader was supposed to revolutionize publishing by freeing people from having to carry books around. Now the Web retailer may super-size it for newspaper readers.

Amazon plans to launch this week a bigger version of its Kindle, which may also house textbooks, analysts and media report. The New York Times said the new device could be unveiled on Wednesday and its parent would be involved.

But a larger-format e-reader may not be a quick fix for a struggling newspaper business devastated by crumbling ad revenue and declining readership. Nor would it guarantee a big boost to Amazon's bottom line anytime soon, analysts say.

BlackBerry Curve overtakes iPhone as most popular smartphone

Chalk it up to the fact that the Curve is available on the four biggest U.S. carriers, not to mention a two-for-one sale on Verizon Wireless. Also in the top five for the first quarter of 2009: The Storm and the T-Mobile G1.

The NPD Group just released its U.S. smartphone sales numbers for Q1, and according to their numbers, RIM had BlackBerrys in three of the top five positions, and managed to topple the iPhone 3G from the top of the list.

Despite its early launch woes, the touchscreen BlackBerry Storm appears to be selling strongly, coming in a No. 3 on NPD's list behind the Curve and the iPhone 3G.

The multimedia resume

After Ryan Dougherty sent out about 70 traditional resumes to prospective employers and got no responses, he decided he needed to shake things up.

“I had to take a different approach,” he explains, but he didn’t quite know what to do. That is, until he came across a video resume site called InterviewClips.com and thought, “What do I have to lose?”

He quickly made a video resume and decided whenever he applied for a job online that he would upload a cover letter with a link to the video instead of a standard resume.

Amazon's Kindle 2 a smash hit

Has Amazon finally hit on the right formula with its second version of the Kindle e-book reader? According to TechCrunch, the company has already sold 300,000 of the devices (in less than two months) and expects to pump out 500,000 more before the end of the year. (Some analysts have even higher hopes for the device, with sales projections topping 1 million units.) Either way you cut it, that's a huge win for Amazon.
