AT&T: Metered Net use is "inevitable"

AT&T: Metered Net use is "inevitable" : Ben Patterson : Yahoo! Tech: "First it was Time Warner Cable, then Comcast—and now, AT&T looks poised to jump on the bandwidth-cap bandwagon.

TheStreet.com just quoted an AT&T spokesman who says metered Net usage for its DSL customers sound like a pretty good idea."

I guess we're lucky we had it this good for this long. The unfortunate truth is that we don't have much competition between ISPs. I really only have two broadband options: Time Warner Cable or ATT DSL. And that's part of the issue. Internet service really should be regulated as a public utility just like electricity and water. But that would never happen in a country like the US where corporate interests almost invariably trump the public good.

What's triggering this capping now is the the threat of downloadable video competing with the media already provided by your local cable TV provider. If Time Warner wants to keep your eyes on their traditional cable TV content, then it is in their best interests to stifle the downloadable competition like Amazon UnBox, iTunes, and Netflix's new on demand service.
