Use Old Computer for Web Browsing w/ Google Chrome

In Episode #111 of NerdBoyTV, Ryan Yee describes how to salvage that old dual core desktop computer running (God forbid) Windows Vista and transform it into a sleek web-browsing speedster using Google Chrome.

5 tech products that just won't die

5 tech products that just won't die

Recently, I wrote a story about which tech products will be dead in five years. Boy, was I surprised by the response! Who knew that people could be so passionate about DVD backups?

But it’s that passion for the status quo that keeps some technologies going long past the end of their useful lives. And there are other products that just won’t die because, no matter how inefficient or clunky they may be, nothing else has come along that’s better (or at least better at a reasonable price).

Five, in particular, should have gone the way of the dodo long ago, yet continue to hang on and, in some cases, even flourish.

iPhone threatens Android rule

iPhone threatens Android rule

As the iPhone starts to proliferate on other carriers after being released from AT&T's exclusive hold, it threatens to encroach upon the once-comfy rule Android phones have enjoyed in the smartphone market.

One analyst, Needham & Co.'s Charlie Wolf, says that a recent decline of Android's market share in the U.S. — from 52.4 percent to 49.5 percent in first quarter of 2011 — signals the beginning of the end of the Google mobile operating system's unrivaled ascent to the top of the smartphone heap.

GigaOM's Ryan Kim quoted from Needham's note, which points to a possible surge in iPhone 5 sales once the new model arrives this fall on Verizon.

In a report released in May, the addition of the iPhone to the Verizon network accounted for a boost in sales for Apple (16.9 million iPhones sold to fanboys and girls in 90 countries, doubling its sales from the same time last year), but Android held onto the No.1 spot at 36 percent of the market share worldwide.

In just a few short years, we've seen Android — with its prolific installment on so many models over so many carriers — shoot by leaps and bounds over other systems, until finally it surpassed Symbian for the No.1 spot during the first quarter of 2011.

But faster than a medieval coup — the king is dead, long live the king — it looks like Apple's iOS may be poised to hoist iPhones over the palace walls with big gains in the first quarter of 2011 (29.5 percent, up from 17.2 percent in the previous quarter), and with the iOs bumping up from 19 percent to 28 percent (thanks to CNN Money's Philip Elmer-DeWitt for providing more snippets from Needham's note).

More reason to think that Apple may very well overtake Google: cheaper iPhones? That's what GigaOM's Kim writes, and that would make for some interesting jousts since Android phones have historically been more accessible to the more cost-conscious consumer.

Still sliding: Nokia and Research in Motion (which recently started issuing pink slips), which bolsters the reality that the smartphone wars are really between Apple and Google at this point.

REVIEW: Samsung Infuse 4G (AT&T)

CNET Senior Editor Bonnie Cha reviews the new Samsung Infuse 4G available now just south of $300 on AT&T. Looks like a beast of a phone with super Amoled touchscreen and 4.5-inch display. Oh, and did I mention it's with 4G speed? I think Bonnie said it ships with Android 2.2.1 OS and has an 8-megapixel camera (nice). Check it out...I want it ;-)

Steve Jobs announces iCloud at WWDC in SF (LIVE event completed)

...and that's all folks! No new iPhone 5 (hehehe). Steve's outta here! Good show, Apple! Lots to think about!

Surprise! Apparently you will be able to sync your entire music collection (even those NOT purchased through iTunes) with iCloud! Hmmmmmmmmmm, now how will THIS work? and Steve just announces the price—only $24.99 for 20,000 songs! Oh oh, Amazon.com! Better rethink your pricing. Maybe Google will be able to match since they ALWAYS make everything FREE!

And now more details on iCloud for music. Steve says, "This is the first time we've seen this in the music industry -- no charge for multiple downloads to different devices." Any purchases made in iTunes can be transferred (at no extra charge) to any of your Apple devices via iCloud! I like it! Steve says, "We're making it free, and we're very excited about it. So that's iCloud. It stores your content and pushes it to all of your devices, and it's integrated with all your apps." Leave it to Apple to make ALL of this work seamlessly together all linked by iCloud...oh yeah, and totally FREE! Still want to know how all this streaming is gonna affect data plan pricing on smartphones.

Now he's going to demo how iCloud will work for Photo Stream. I can't wait...get to the music, get to the music (LOL). So pardon the pun, but PICTURE this—you take a picture once on the iPhone and it goes directly to the cloud and pushes it back down to ALL other devices (e.g., iPad, Mac, iPod). No more fiddling around transferring photos back and forth between devices. I like THIS one a LOT! Oh okay, it's stored 30 days in the cloud...now THAT might be an issue, but it's still a freebie. Picture taken with an iPhone INSTANTLY appears on the iPad, as well. Cool iCloud magic!

Steve is demoing how to share Keynote document between iPhone and iPad using iCloud. Steve says, "The piece that we weren't finished with was how do we move those documents around to multiple devices, and Documents in the Cloud solves that problem for us."

Oh MY! THIS must be the surprise SHOCKER! iClouds is gonna be FREE! Yup FREE! Wow, if you bought an app on your iPhone, simply click on the iCloud button on your iPad to wirelessly download and install that same app on THAT device. Mmmmmmmm, very cool!

Steve's idea? Let's demote the PC and Mac to simply just another device (not the hub of your information life) and let's push our important information up into "the cloud." Now, this is just ME thinking out loud, but how will all this wireless streaming affect me and my limited smartphone data plans? Streaming ain't free, ya know! LOL! Gonna need a @me.com account if you wanna share data across all Apple devices—guess that makes sense.

Steve Jobs discusses the evolution of the computer over the last 10 years bringing us to mobile devices today...get ready for iCloud!

Oh, now THIS is interesting...new messaging service between iOS users!!! Wow! and it's WiFi OR 3G compatible. And here comes Steve Jobs!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Apple is cutting the PC cable! No more activation using a computer. Just take the iPhone right out of the box, press a button, and it's activated. AND you can sync iTunes to your device wirelessly! Nice, Apple! Hehehe, oh my, Apple LOVES to take swipes at Microsoft and Google Android (funny!).

Smart! There's now a Camera button on the Lockscreen! About time! Hmmmmmmmmmm, and draggable addresses—wonder how I'd use that?

Safari "Reminders" is getting a LOT of attention. Let's see how THIS one works.

Safari "Reading List" lets you read online stories later.

There's also a Newsstand feature in iOS 5. Hmmmmmmmmmmm, interesting! and now Scott is discussing tighter integration of Twitter in the iOS 5 mobile operating system. Jeez Android, I may (just may) need to rethink my not buying an iPhone 4 (or even iPhone 5)!!! This sure is looking nice, all with the easy-to-use Apple signature. They are masters of the consumer-focused user interface! Now, they're going to demo Safari, something I'm not AS interested in since I'm a dedicated Firefox PC user (hehehe). But I do use Safari (have to) on the iPad. Let's listen anyway...

All notifications are housed in ONE Notification Center now.

Now, onto iOS 5 with Scott Forstall. Wow, 25 million iPads sold—I knew it was a LOT, but this is INCREDIBLE!!! and $2.5 BILLION paid to app developers so far...I'm sure THAT caught the attention of those at this Worldwide Developers Conference at the Moscone Center! LOL

...and a very cool Favorites bar at the top! Lion will only be available via the Mac App Store—no more buying discs. Are you listening Microsoft? hehehe AND it's only gonna cost $29.99 to upgrade—are you listening Microsoft???? It'll be available in July...

Next up, a new version of Mail for OS X Lion! Nice!

Now demoing "AirDrop" with its peer-to-peer sharing.

Gonna have to try this auto-save feature with my Dad—wondering if he might get confused by all the different versions of the same document (grin). Sounds useful, though.

Getting new software applications from lots of different retailers delivered right to your Mac—cool! Wow, I didn't know that the Mac App Store is now the No. 1 channel for buying PC software, even bigger than Best Buy! Not surprised, though! And NOW, the Mac App Store is built right into OS X Lion—damn, Apple is so smart! Everything is fully-connected! And, Lion comes with "auto-save!"

Pretty nifty demo of PhotoBooth. This like it could be a lot of fun to use, huH?

Now demoing OS X Lion in action!

Steve talking about OS X Lion, iOS 5, and something for "the cloud." Sounds like iCloud to me!

Steve Jobs, stage left! ;-)

Even the President doesn't get THIS kinda coverage! hehehe

Looks like it's getting kinda crowded at the Moscone Center in San Francisco in anticipation of Steve Jobs' keynote address to the Worldwide Developers Conference. Three minutes to showtime!

Meal Snap is an app that your eyes won't want to believe. With this app, you can snap a photo of any food item, literally, ANY food item and it will tell you what it is plus the estimated calories. The food item that you are snapping a picture of doesn't even need to have packaging! No writing, titles, etc. needed, the app will recognize the food itself, even if it's a block of cheese.
